Les rigidités des prix et des salaires nominaux sont au cœur du débat théorique macro-économique. Selon les économistes keynésiens, elles permettent de rendre compte des effets des chocs de demande - par exemple une augmentation des dépenses publiques - sur la production. En revanche, pour les économistes néo-classiques ces rigidités n'ont pas de fondements micro-économiques. Pour répondre à cette critique, la nouvelle macro-économie keynésienne a développé l'idée que de faibles coûts d'ajustement des prix (small menu costs) peuvent être à l'origine de fluctuations importantes de l'activité.
